Unique to Animas Pump

Despite their many similarities, each of the insulin pumps currently available in Canada offers its own distinct features. Therefore, each insulin pump fills a unique need in the type 1 diabetes community. The key to success in choosing an insulin pump is determining which one has the features that meets YOUR family’s needs. Here are the unique features that set Animas apart from the rest...

Animas® One Touch® Ping and Animas® Vibe

  • The Animas Vibe pump system includes an integrated Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) by pairing an Animas pump with an integrated Dexcom CGM. As a result, in addition to the pump-specific benefits outlined in this article, the joint pump-CGM system has all the benefits of Continuous Glucose Monitoring, including predictive alerts for high and low trends, which notify the user if glucose rises above or falls below a given threshold.
  • Both the Ping and the Vibe are waterproof insulin pumps (IPX8 rating, the highest available), tested and proven waterproof for up to 3.6 metres (12 feet) for 24 hours. For the CGM portion of the Vibe model: CGM Transmitter and Sensor are water resistant up to 2.4 metres (8 feet) for 24 hours. Wearing an Animas insulin pump with infusion set
The company will guarantee the pump against prolonged submersion, so your child has the option of wearing his insulin pump in the swimming pool or bathtub (which may be particularly helpful in the summer months or on vacation when kids tend to spend more time in the water).

(Please note that the meter remote is not waterproof.)
    • Ability to bolus wirelessly with meter remote up to 10 feet away (meter remote included with system).
tips from the trenches of type 1 diabetesAs a parent of a young child, we have found this to be a key feature for us, allowing convenient insulin delivery even at a distance (when our son is playing or is at a birthday party) without having to take the pump out of his pocket or pump belt. Danielle’s family finds this feature particularly helpful on ski days, when the pump is buried under winter clothing – the meter can be stored in an outside pocket for easy access.

    • A stand-alone Dexcom CGM (that does not communicate with the pump) is also available separate from the Vibe if you choose the Ping or a different pump model.

tips from the trenches of type 1 diabetesSince we didn't want to give up our meter remote (not available with the Vibe), we kept the Ping pump and meter remote system, and added a stand-alone Dexcom CGM. This means we get all the benefits of CGM, but the drawback is that rather than viewing the CGM info on the pump, we need to carry a separate CGM receiver.

    • Uses non-proprietary infusion sets, allowing for more options in terms of types/manufacturers (which could impact comfort or the ability to resolve potential skin reactions).
tips from the trenches of type 1 diabetesThis has been a key feature for our family, as my son is allergic to the components used to make some brands of infusion sets (cannula and adhesive). The universal Luer-lock design of his Animas insulin pump has allowed us to branch out into other brands and manufacturers of infusion sets, giving us the freedom to choose an infusion set that his skin did not react to.

    • Colour screen included on the insulin pump and the meter.
    • Insulin pump is fully operational on its own (i.e. without the meter remote). You are able to use other meters as desired (but, as with all linked systems, you will lose the ability to communicate with the pump).
    • Meter remote automatically stores and summarizes history information about insulin delivery, blood glucose readings, alarms, and carbohydrates so it can be used without a computer for data analysis.
    • Diasend® web-based software (free for Animas pumpers) allows users to store, review, and print their Animas® insulin pump and blood glucose data on the Diasend.com website for trend detection and blood glucose management decisions.
    • 500-item carb database capability in the meter remote: You can create your own carb factors for foods your child typically eats.
    • One size (200-unit) of insulin pump cartridge (reservoir) is available.
    • Free vacation loaner program provides a back-up insulin pump for you to bring with you on vacation (peace of mind just in case something happens with the usual insulin pump while you are away).
    • 4 year warranty period.
